I have always loved cars, so i studied mechanic engineering as i wanted to design cars and work for a company like Ferrari. I got myself a job in BMW in Germany after my undergrad degree, but had developed an interest in energy during my studies, so i did a masters degree in Energy Engineering instead of taking the BMW job.

So i started out working in Mechanical Engineering, then worked on Energy Engineering projects, now i do lots of Chemical Engineering, Biomedical engineering and Advanced machine type projects.

Engineering is very broad once your qualified, so i work on different teams using my skills (mechanical & energy skills mostly) to help other engineers solve problems.

Mostly the career development started because galway has a large amount of medical companies, so naturally the job search focused on these….. Then I just loved the work!

I went for Mechanical Engineering in college because I didn’t know which type of engineering I wanted to do! And mechanical is one of the most broad courses. I have plenty of creative hobbies & I found the design aspect of engineering the most interesting so tried to move towards that with my work placement in college & my career choice. My current job is Mechanical Design Engineer & I’m very happy with this area at the moment. I know I have the option in future to work in other areas if I want to try something different.

I just gradually drifted into Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering. At College I studied science and found that my best subject was Materials Science. When it came to further study for a PhD I chose a project about the materials in the propellers of ships (really big ones!) which brought me into Mechanical Engineering.
