Their ideas normally come from trying to solve a current world problem (making clean water, creating clean energy, improving medicine) and using their skills & experiences to try and solve them.

Or from trying to improve current technologies such as making your car use less fuel, making your phone faster but smaller or creating better medical treatments or devices.

Each engineers person experiences & skills will give them a unique view or idea on how to solve a problem. So when you put engineers together they will all have different ideas on how solve the same problem.

Colin is right – ideas mostly come from trying to solve problems. So if you work in a company then you will be presented with problems that the company is trying to solve.
But you also need to be on the lookout for new ideas – better ways of doing things which nobody even thought about yet. This seems like it would be hard to do but like everything it gets easier when you try. Just try looking around the house at things you are using and think what’s wrong with them and how they could be better.
