How the car acts normally tells you have its broken. If it wont start at all it could be the fuel system, the electrics or problems in the cars computers. It it puts out smoke it could be the exhaust, a problem with the fuel or an issue in the engine (like oil burning in the engine).

Once you know what problems are happening, you can check the parts that are connected to these issues and you will generally find whats wrong so you can fix it.

I usually get my Dad or brother to take it for a drive if i think there’s something wrong and they confirm if there is or not.

Smoke coming out the engine! Or if it doesn’t start at all…. Or a dodgy clicking sound coming from under the bonnet. Newer cars are all hooked up electronically – so signal light should flash up on the dash to let you know what the problem is. Failing that it’s a trip to the garage
